The method

Built on decades of assessment science.

WhatIQ uses the puzzle format psychologists have relied on since 1938 and the scoring model behind today’s standardised exams. Your result is an estimate on the standard IQ scale, shown with the range it most likely sits in.

  • Matrix reasoning
    Raven’s format, since 1938

Each puzzle is a grid with one piece missing, the format John C. Raven published in 1938. It tests reasoning without words or arithmetic.

  • IRT scoring
The model behind exams like the GMAT

Item response theory weighs every answer by how hard its puzzle is, the approach adaptive exams like the GMAT use.

  • Standard IQ scale
    Average 100, SD 15

Scores sit on the scale clinical tests use: an average of 100, with two in three adults between 85 and 115.

  • Puzzles made for you, each checked to have exactly one answer
  • A 90% range with every score
  • A time limit on every puzzle
  • A certificate anyone can verify

Questions, answered.

Is this a real IQ test?

It is a matrix reasoning test, the kind of puzzle John C. Raven first published in 1938, scored on the standard IQ scale (average 100, standard deviation 15). It gives an estimate from 24 puzzles, not a clinical assessment.

How long does it take?

About 15 minutes. Each puzzle has its own time limit, from 45 to 75 seconds, more for the harder ones. We warn you when 10 seconds are left.

Why do I get a range?

No 24-puzzle test can pin a score to one point, so we show the range your score most likely sits in.

What comes with membership?

Your full result: the score with its range, the report and a certificate. Plus daily brain training (three short games a day, a streak and a level for each skill) and retakes with new puzzles.

Who sees my results?

Only you, unless you share your certificate.
